Dixon County Spelling Bee 2019

Five students and one alternate travelled to Allen Consolidated Schools on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 1:30 P.M. to participate in the Dixon County Spelling Bee. These students were Ben Bodlak, Julia McKinney, Cora Jackson, Bailey Paden, Lexi Swick, and Kemper Carlson.

The Dixon County Spelling Bee consists of two rounds. The first round is a written round in which all participants have the opportunity to correctly spell twenty-five words. The top spellers in the written round move on to compete in the second round which is an oral round.

The Ponca students were on top of their spelling game as all of the participants made it to the oral round. Cora Jackson (5th grade) earned top prize as she correctly spelled “grenadier” to win. Ben Bodlak (7th grade) earned 2nd place. Lexi Swick (6th grade) earned fifth place honors.

Cora Jackson will move on to compete in the 2019 Omaha World Herald Midwest Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 2 at 9:00 A.M. The competition will be hosted at the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple located at 202 S 20th St in Omaha, Nebraska. She will compete against nearly 80 students from Nebraska and western-Iowa. The winner of the Omaha World-Herald Midwest Spelling Bee receives an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. to compete against champion spellers from across the country in the Scripps National Spelling Bee the end of May. The Omaha World-Herald is proud to sponsor The Midwest Spelling Bee since 1929.

Thank you to Allen Consolidated Schools and Superintendent Mike Pattee for hosting the spelling bee this year, and congratulations to Cora, Ben, and Lexi as well as all of our Ponca contestants for their accomplishments.
