Michael Brewer at State Wrestling Meet

Brewer Comes Up Short in Opening Match But Gets Good Experience At State Tourney

Michael Brewer and the coaches headed down to Omaha to the CenturyLink Center last Thursday, Friday and Saturday to try and bring home a medal from the State Tournament.  It was unfortunate but Michael came down with an illness Sunday after the district tournament and was running a 103 up until the night before the State tournament.  Michael headed into his first match against Fleecs of Sutherland.  Brewer got on the scoreboard first with a takedown in the first period.  So heading into the second period Michael was up 2-0. Fleecs chose down to start the period and late in the period Michael lost control and let him up which cut Michael's lead to 2-1.  Heading into the third period the coaches thought we had it in the bag.  "I looked at Michael and asked him what he wanted to do, I noticed he was getting pretty tired but knew he would give everything he had," said Coach Tranmer.  Michael said it was up to the coaches and we said go down.  Michael struggled to get out and when  Fleecs put in a leg things got scary.  Michael was doing a good job of defending getting turned but when his left elbow got a little to close to his side he got turned for a quick 2 count and we were down 3-2 with about a minute to go.  Michael tried to get out from under Fleece but was stoned on every attempt.  The match ended with a 3-2 loss for Michael.  "As coaches you look at the match and Mike had so many opportunities to score but with him sick for 3 days and no practice it really drained him."  Both Coach Velez and I thought with the way Mike had wrestled this year it was a great choice to go down for the 3rd period but when you have no energy it is hard to get out."  So the loss put Michael on the consolation side of the bracket and a long road to get to a medal.  In his path was Buhring from SEM a big strong Senior that was upset in the first round and he had a chip on his shoulder.  Michael came out more aggressive in this match but in the second period was stuck on bottom and and was pinned in the second period.  With the loss Michael's season and State tournament ended.  On the year Michael ended with a 32-12 record and a good experience at the State Tourney going 0-2.  Michael will be ready to go next season with nothing but bringing home a State Championship.
